Some of the core American beliefs and values that define our relationship between citizens and the government and citizens which each other is individualism, equality of opportunity, free enterprise, rule of law, and limited government. Individualism is the principle of being independent where government must protect an individual’s rights and freedoms. Equality of opportunity is the ideal that everyone is granted the same opportunity to succeed and that jobs or positions go to the most qualified. Free enterprise defines the relationship between government and citizen because it is the ideal that the government is not over controlling or regulating business. Rule of law is based on the theory that everyone is affected by the law, even the lawmakers so that no one is above the law. Limited government helps establish a relationship because it allows citizens to have more influence on the government policy.

Some of the influence of political socialization is family, school, peers, and media. Family is a strong influence in political ideology because parents are one of the biggest influences in someone’s life and because even stronger when they actively engage in politics within the household. School is also a big influence because education about politics in critical in an individual’s involvement because the more knowledgeable someone is about the subject, the more willing they might be to speak their opinion. Peers play another large role within politics because both children and adults seek to conform to the norm of their peer groups. Trying to fit in and having an opinion on politics is difficult if one person has different viewpoints than other people in the group. The media is another big factor in political socializations because many people learn about political events through different forms of media depending on age.

Some of the voting rights protections in the Constitution are important because they represent different eras of this country and how it has evolved to become a more equal place to live. The 15th amendment allows males of any race to vote as a result of the civil war and the need to have all opinions be represented. The 19th amendment was the result of World War I where women had a huge role and allowed both males and females of any race to vote. The 26th amendment was largely the result of the protests regarding the Vietnam War on many college campuses around the US in the 70’s. It resulted in the change where anyone 18th and over can register to vote.

State law and individual choice play large roles in voter turnout in elections because some states have more lax laws about when you can register to vote before in elections. Also if the state is a swing state, people of both political ideologies are more likely to vote where as in a democrat or republican dominated state, people are less likely to vote because they already know the result of the vote.

US voter turnout is traditionally very low compared to other democracies because our voting process is much more complicated than other countries. Also, many citizens take for granted the right to vote and share our opinion because people right now have not experienced what it is like to have opinions be suppressed.

Younger people are the least likely to vote whereas the older generation is the most likely because of more experience in politics. Whites are the most likely to vote whereas ethnic minorities are least likely. Those that are more religiously active are more likely to vote because they have stronger opinions that those who don’t practice religion as often or at all. Also region has an effect on voting because citizens who live in swing states more often vote to secure their representative that best identifies with their ideology whereas in a party dominant state, people are least likely because they most likely already know the outcome of the vote.
